President Barack Obama will nominate John Brennan, the White House homeland-security and counterterrorism adviser, to be the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency, according to multiple reports.

According to Politico, Brennan's nomination will come this afternoon at the White House and will be a package deal with Obama's nomination of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense.

If confirmed by the Senate, Brennan would succeed Mike Morell, the agency's acting director. Brennan would be the next full-time appointee after David Petraeus, who resigned in November over an extramarital affair.

Brennan has a quarter-century of experience in the CIA. In the Obama administration, he was heavily involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Obama considered nominating Brennan in 2008, but he faced backlash over his role in enhanced interrogation techniques in the Bush administration. Brennan denied he was involved in any enhanced interrogation methods, including waterboarding, but he took his name out of the running.
