A Jerusalem Post reporter was beaten by 'a gang of unknown assailants' in Athens on Tuesday as he tried to film a mob attack outside one of the city's main tourist attractions, reports the Jerusalem Post.

Gil Shefler went to Greece to cover the rise of the Golden Dawn — the extreme Right-wing party with neo-Nazi overtones that recently won 21 seats in Greece parliament.

Shefler saw a group of about 20 masked men wielding batons and sticks beating refugees, migrants and homeless people in the middle of the street outside the National Archaeological Museum, so he instinctively took out his camera and was subsequently assaulted.

He was taken to a hospital and treated for head and chest wounds, and was later released.

From the Jerusalem Post:

Police said they were not sure who was behind the attack. Sources said the culprits were either anarchists associated with Syriza, a farleft party, who may have been cracking down on alleged drug dealers and junkies, many of who are migrants and refugees; or members of Golden Dawn, a neo-Nazi group, whose members are known to occasionally beat and stab foreigners.

Here is Shefler's report:
