A former secret agent has described how he played matchmaker for an al-Qaeda leader in a bid to help the CIA track him down and kill him.
Morten Storm says he helped a blonde Croatian convert and social worker called Aminah to travel to Yemen to meet the senior commander.
Storm has produced emails and videos between the couple which show the courtship which he mediated on Facebook.
Describing herself as appreciating “family values, and high moral standards,” Aminah said she did not mind “at all” that Awlaki already had two wives.
She asked if she could marry the terrorist preacher and Awlaki in turn asked for more information about her.
On December 14, Awlaki wrote to her: “There are two things that I would like to stress. The first is that I do not live in a fixed location, therefore my living conditions vary widely. Sometimes I even live in a tent.
“Second, because of my security situation I sometimes have to seclude myself which means me and my family would not meet with any persons for extended periods.
“If you can live in difficult conditions, do not mind loneliness and can live with restrictions on your communications with others then alhamdulillah [thanks be to god] that is great.”
When she said she wasn’t sure she could cope with those conditions, he wrote back: “Tell the sister that currently I am not living in a tent but in a house of one of my friends. I do not leave the house and in such a situation my wife would be with me all the time.
“I personally prefer this arrangement over the tent in the mountains because it gives me a better setup for reading, writing and doing research.”
Aminah made it to Yemen with Storm’s help but the CIA lost track of her. Awlaki wrote to Storm that she had not lived up to expectations, adding: “....she is much better!”
The CIA was forced to launch another attempt to find Awlaki which eventually led to his death from a drone attack in September last year.
However Aminah survived and wrote to Storm that she wanted to become a suicide bomber but had been prevented by Nasir Abdel Karim al-Wuhayshi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsular (AQAP), known as Abu Basir.
“I would be making a martyr operation, but Sheikh Basir said that the sisters so far [can] not carry out operations because it will mean a lot of problems for them, and then the government will begin to imprison Ansar [al Qaeda] sisters... so I can not perform operation.”
But she added: “I want to be killed the same way as my husband was...inshaallah.”
AWLAKI TO AMINAH
“This recording is done specifically for sister Aminah at her request and the brother who’s carrying this recording is a trustworthy brother, the brother that is communicating with you.
“So having said that I pray that Allah guides you to what is best for you in this life and in the hereafter and guides you to choose what is better for you regarding this proposal.
“I would also suggest if possible if you could also do a recorded message and send it over that would be great.”
AMINAH TO AWLAKI
“As-salaam alaikum. Brother it’s me, Aminah, and I just want to tell you that right now I feel nervous and this is very awkward for me, so I just taped this just that you can see how I look and just to know that I’m OK.
“I will accept everything what is needed to do this way that I’ve chosen, that we’ve chosen, and inshaallah Allah will help us with this.
“I hope you are well and your family are safe as well. So far this is one message and I will send you another message, private message, inshaallah.”
